Franconia Notch is home to many sites of natural wonder. Though it was once home to the Old Man of the Mountain, several other rock formations still exist there including the Indian Head, The Old Woman of the Mountain, The Hound Dog, and Washington Lying In State. Profile Lake (headwater of the Pemigewassett/Merrimac River) is also located here.

Sandwich Notch connects Sandwich and Thornton near the Waterville Valley line. Sandwich Notch Road is still a dirt lane as it was in the 18th and 19th centuries when it was a main thouroughfare from points North and West to the seacoast. Home to two-way traffic in warmer months, though only one and a half car-widths wide most of its 9 mile length, it is not for the faint hearted, nor for vehicles with low clearance and no four-wheel-drive.
